Something About the Editor:
Ever since I was a kid, or as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved computers, gadgets, and anything mechanical, electronic, or otherwise clever. Growing up in the Silicon Valley, I had an unbelievable amount of exposure to innovation and was inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit. Naturally, following college, I returned to the valley to work in the tech sector. Over the years, I worked for pioneering companies such as General Magic, 3Com (pre and post US Robotics/Palm merger) and WebEx (now Cisco), further fueling my love affair with technology. During the DotCom boom and bust, I experienced the startup life firsthand, living the surreal life in San Francisco among arrogant visionaries with lofty expectations and ridiculous dreams. Despite the crash and tough times that followed, instead of being jaded, I became forever attached to the Internet and to what was possible.
While the tech landscape has changed and keeps changing, one thing that remains constant is my fascination with tech and innovation. No matter how much I try to hide it, I can’t deny it – I’m a tech geek and gadget freak through and through. I’ve always been an early adopter so I have to be on top of or own the latest and greatest.
Another constant for me has been my love for travel and adventure. Growing up I always loved our family road trips and vacations for skiing, camping and fishing adventures, and summer getaways. It wasn’t just the travel but the love of the outdoors and exploring. But it wasn’t until after college did I really get the bug for international travel. Shortly after ditching the cap and gown, two college buddies and I took off on a two month backpacking adventure throughout 11 countries in Europe. It was the most incredible and enlightening experience I’d ever had and one I’ll never forget. Since then, travel and adventures to new places have been my livelihood – so much so that it influences my race choices for competing in cycling and triathlons.
While I have friends that have logged more miles with more stamps in their passport, I’ve been fortunate enough to live a balanced life and have traveled to many great places near and afar.
Work or play, I’ve always brought my tech or gadgets with me on my trips for one reason or another. GadgetTraveler is about a combination of travel and tech, the two things I love. It chronicles some of my own experiences as a road warrior, adventurer, athlete, and leisure traveler. It also attempts to provide insights, tips and tricks on the places I go and the gadgets and gear I use – not only to record and document, but to better navigate and explore, and make travel safer, smarter, more efficient, more comfortable and more enjoyable.
Whether you’re a challenged technophob yet to have your first passport page stamped or a power user techie having traveled the far ends of the Earth, I hope you will find GadgetTraveler to be a good resource. As Jim Cramer says, “my job is not only to entertain you, but educate you.” I can only hope to do the same!
Happy Travels!
Steve
